BIOGRAPHY

The German bass studied at the Musikhochschule Detmold and with Hans Sotin at the Hochschule für Musik Cologne, where he got his degree in opera and concert singing with excellence.

After first engagements at the opera houses of Münster and Bonn, in 2001 he was bound to the Sächsischen Staatsoper Dresden (Semperoper), which is until now his artistic center. Furthermore he has guest performances at nearly all great opera houses in Europe and the United States, and in the most important concert halls around the world.

His repertoire includes Figaro and Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Alfonso (Cosí), Rocco (Fidelio), Kaspar (Freischütz), König Karl (Schubert: Fierrabras), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Baculus (Wildschütz), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Banco (Macbeth), Padre Guardiano (Forza del destino), Sparafucile (Rigoletto) Filippo II (Don Carlo), Lodovico (Otello),  Daland (Holländer), Landgraf Herrmann (Tannhäuser), König Heinrich (Lohengrin), König Marke (Tristan), Veit Pogner and Hans Sachs (Meistersinger), Fasolt (Rheingold), Hunding (Walküre), Fafner (Siegfried), Gurnemanz (Parsifal), Gremin (Onegin), Arkel (Pelléas), Wassermann (Rusalka), Pimen (Boris Godunow), Peneios (Strauss: Daphne) and La Roche (Capriccio).

A key role is Sarastro (Magic Flute) which he performed under Claudio Abbado in Baden-Baden. With this part he succeeded also at the San Francisco Opera, the New York MET, at the Vienna State Opera, at the Salzburg Festival and at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) in London, Opera House Zürich, State Opera House Munich and Semperoper Dresden.

From 2010 he is permanent guest at the Bayreuth Festival. In 2019 he will sing there again König Heinrich (Lohengrin) and König Marke (Tristan).

2019/20 he will perform in Dresden a.o. Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Hans Sachs (Meistersinger),  Rocco (Fidelio), Sarastro (Zauberflöte)  and Lord Sidney (Viaggio a Reims) in a new production.

In Zürich he will perform the bass part in a scenic version of Verdi Requiem and at the state opera Munich Gurnemanz (Parsifal).

Georg Zeppenfeld has a marked preference for the oratorio and recital repertoire. Oratorios from the baroque to the romantic era gave opportunities to work with Pierre Boulez, Riccardo Chailly, Sir Colin Davis, Daniele Gatti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Marek Janowski, Lorin Maazel, Andris Nelsons, Antonio Pappano, Christian Thielemann and many other famous conductors.

The multifarious and large repertoire is documented on numerous publications on CD and DVD as well as in many TV and radio productions of european braodcasting organisations.
