BEETHOVEN'S 9th at New Year's at the Vienna Konzerthaus

As is tradition in many parts of the world these days, the Viennese public will celebrate the days around New Year with performances of Beethoven’s triumphant Symphony No. 9. Vienna’s Konzerthaus welcomes a strong line-up of leading soloists, including Machreich Artists tenor Julian Prégardien and soprano Christiane Karg among the ranks. At the helm of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra is the Finnish conductor Dima Slobodeniouk.

On 7 May 1824, 200 years ago, Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was premiered in Vienna's Kärntnertortheater and thrilled audiences even then. One of the most famous works of classical music, the piece has continued to serve as a beacon for people's longing for peace. Most famous and well-loved is the Symphony’s climactic Ode to Joy in its final movement, which never fails to lift the spirit in every hall in which it is played.
