Based on Grimm's fairy tale, Hamburg-born composer Iris ter Schiphorst and her librettist Helga Utz have created an energetic, imaginative musical theatre work for children aged 6 and above. Tobias Kratzer is staging Die Gänsemagd as part of his artistic directorship and season opening at opera stabile, one day after Das Paradies und die Peri, the opening production on the main stage. As a flock of geese, the children watching become part of the action in the middle of the meadow. Together with the musicians and ensemble singers, they immerse themselves in this piece, which is being performed in Hamburg for the first time, and experience opera as a lively, accessible art form with enchanting melodies that give you goose bumps.
Ida Aldrian, a permanent member of the ensemble who will also appear as Hänsel in Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel and as Suzuki in Puccini's Madama Butterfly during the season, makes her role debut as the princess in this production.
