Danish Tenor Peter Lodahl sings the title role in Enjott Schneider’s opera Marco Polo, which has its world premiere at the Guangzhou Opera House and then moves on to the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center in Beijing.
The opera is set during Marco Polo’s years in China and is written in Mandarin in its entirety. For Peter Lodahl, learning his role was a great challenge: since last fall, he has been studying the phonetics of his lines and the meaning of each sentence for several hours each day, so that he knows exactly what he is singing. Next to Peter Lodahl, the Belgian coloratura soprano Elise Caluwaerts is the only other European singer featured in the production – all other roles have been cast with Chinese singers.
The world premiere and the work’s first performances take place at the Guangzhou Opera House. The production then moves on to the Chinese capital, where it will be presented on three evenings at the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center in Beijing.
