Highly dramatic stage presence, memorable role design and vocal richness of colour - these are just some of the attributes that make up Iris Vermillion's internationally acclaimed role interpretations on the opera stage. Whether as Klytämnestra in Elektra, Herodias in Salome or most recently Margarethe von Parma in Christian Jost's German premiere of Egmont - time and again Iris Vermillion inspires the audience with striking interpretations that get under the skin.
In the upcoming premiere of Janáček's Katia Kabanova at Graz Opera, Iris Vermillion now offers a haunting portrait of the role as the rich merchant widow "Kabanicha": As the young Katia's mother-in-law, she rules with an iron hand and creates an atmosphere of permanent numbness and coldness which collides with any desire for Katia's individual realization, ultimately leading to disaster ... to be experienced from 18 March at Graz Opera.
