Adrian Eröd enjoyed a particular personal success with the role of Prospero in the Austrian premiere of Thomas Adès' The Tempest in 2015. Nine years later, the work based on Shakespeare's The Tempest can now be seen again on the stage of the Vienna State Opera in the adaptation by Meredith Oakes and, in addition to Adès' very own musical language, also impresses with the scenic realisation devised by Robert Lepage and the multidisciplinary theatre company Ex Machina.
By recreating the auditorium and stage of La Scala in Milan from three different angles, Lepage's production deliberately allows for different levels of reception and perspectives on the protagonists, who are both victims of Prospero's vengeful rage and spectators of the magical theatre world on his "Milanese" island.
Thomas Adès, who already rehearsed and conducted the first Staatsoper performance in 2015, will once again be on the podium for all four evenings of the current revival.
