Ringing in the Beethoven Year 2020, his Ninth Symphony has been chosen by many international orchestras all over the world, a fact reflected on our artists’ calendars as well:
First off is a soloist quartet made up of Sophie Karthäuser, Katrin Wundsam, Werner Güra and Paul Armin Edelmann which performs with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Bruno Weil. The Finnish orchestra ends its year of performances on December 18 and 19 with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”.
Sumi Hwang, recently celebrated for her portrayal of Micaëla at the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden, takes on the soprano part in Beethoven’s last symphony on December 19 and 20, when the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra performs the work under its conductor-in-residence, Markus Stenz.
The traditional performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony for New Year’s will be given by the Munich Philharmonic under Manfred Honeck on December 30 and 31 – the high-carat cast features tenor Werner Güra, among others – and we say: bring on the Beethoven Year!
