In a follow-up to her acclaimed album of Mahler songs, Christiane Karg takes us on a Christmas tour, in the select company of fellow music-makers. Revisiting holiday memories through the eyes of a child, but with the benefit of her superb artistry as a lieder specialist, the German soprano shines a light on some enchanting rarities of German and French repertoire, along with examples of Spanish, Basque, and Scandinavian traditions... A treasure trove of hidden gems!
Christiane Karg wanted so show with this unique album, that all these pieces she selected are united by the way they view the world through the eyes of a child. Unquestionably, this is the common thread running through all the selections on this album. Even though, in some ways, the recurrence of Christmas celebrations may bring to mind the absence of the loved ones we have lost in the meantime, each new generation applies itself tirelessly to the task of instilling this Weihnachtsgefühl (Christmas spirit) in its young, as though trying to regain a kind of Eden, lost forever and always sought after. It is really that spirit that I wished to share with you in this album, each of whose selections has its rightful place, at least to my way of thinking. I may put it another way, even though this sounds awfully commonplace: the best Christmas gift cannot be bought. It is simply the time we spend with those we cherish and love.
