Following several years since her last performance in Japan, soprano Christiane Karg returns to Tokyo to perform selected orchestral songs by Richard Strauss together with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its chief conductor Fabio Luisi.
The five orchestral songs presented in this context (Das Rosenband op. 36,1; -Freundliche Vision op. 48,1; Waldseligkeit op. 49,1; Befreit op. 39,4; Morgen, op.27,4) were all set for voice and piano before 1901 and were also orchestrated by Richard Strauss himself at various later dates. The programme of this concert, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Arnold Schönberg's birth, is framed by the prelude to Wagner's Tristan und Isolde and Schönberg's symphonic poem Pelleas und Melisande, premiered in Vienna in 1905.
Accompanied by her long-standing Lied partner Gerold Huber at the piano, Christiane Karg will follow up her two performances in the NHK Hall with a solo recital in the Oji Hall, which is renowned for its high-calibre chamber music concerts, where she will pay homage to Clara Schumann and also perform works by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms in addition to songs by the composer - in keeping with the frequently discussed triangular constellation.
