DAVID STEFFENS Makes his Role Debut as Escamillo in Stuttgart

After an intense festival summer in Salzburg, where David Steffens appeared in no less than three productions (Mozart’s Idomeneo under Teodor Currentzis, Enescu’s Oedipe under Ingo Metzmacher and Strauss’ Salome under Franz Welser-Möst) and his recent debut as the druid high priest Oroveso in Bellini’s Norma, David Steffens now expands his repertoire by another major role of his fach: until November 9, the up-and-coming German bass can now be seen and heard as Escamillo in Georges Bizet’s opera classic Carmen. Sebastian Nübling’s 2006 production interprets Bizet’s masterwork as a post-mortal relationship drama, beyond all folkloristic clichés – an intimate play about the power of the human gaze and the destructive force of hidden drives and aggressions.
