After a celebrated debut at the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra in Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem this past April, the Australian soprano Eleanor Lyons returns to the Belgian orchestra to perform on October 12 and 13 in Antwerp and Ghent, again under Philippe Herreweghe’s baton.
The programme features Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem Op. 66, presumably the composer’s most important contribution to the great tradition of English choral music. The War Requiem was composed in 1961 for the reopening of the Cathedral of Coventry, which had been destroyed by German air raids in World War II, and was first performed there on May 20, 1962. Eleanor Lyons is joined by the English tenor Jeremy Ovenden and the German baritone Thomas Bauer as soloists.
