After appearing as Wellgunde in Das Rheingold last year, the Austrian mezzo-soprano Ida Aldrian will now take on the role of Siegrune in Die Walküre in this year's continuation of the internationally acclaimed and historically informed Ring cycle by the Dresdner Festspielorchester and Concerto Köln.
As part of this academic and artistic project jointly initiated by Kent Nagano, Concerto Köln and the Kunststiftung NRW, Die Walküre, the second part of the tetralogy, will also be performed as it sounded during Wagner's lifetime: the string instruments are played with gut strings, while Wagner tubas, bassoons and oboes have been faithfully reproduced. The orchestra is tuned to 435 Hz, lower than we know today, and the vocal ensemble not only has to sing, but also perform a full melodrama.
When Nagano presented the prelude to this historically informed Ring last summer with Rheingold, it was met with great enthusiasm: "Everything sounds much rougher, more primal and so radically modern that you can't help but be amazed," wrote the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. So we can look forward to the sequel on 21 August at the KKL Lucerne.
