The premiere of the opera in 1904 turned into a historic fiasco: the audience at La Scala in Milan had no idea what to make of the exotic subject matter. But Puccini believed in the piece: "My Butterfly remains what it is. The most emotional opera I have ever written!" He was proved right: Just a few months later, a modified version of Madama Butterfly was a resounding success when it was performed at the Teatro Grande Brescia. To this day, Puccini's "Tragedia giapponese" (Japanese tragedy) remains one of the most popular and touching operas of all time.
Ida Aldrian, a permanent member of the Hamburg State Opera ensemble since the 2019/2020 season, where she has appeared already as Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) and Isabella (L'Italiana in Algeri), is now making an eagerly awaited role debut under the direction of Alexander Joel with Butterfly's servant Suzuki.
Over the coming months, Ida Aldrian will also be appearing as Lola in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Sonjetka in Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Mercédès in Bizet’s Carmen and Siegrune in Wagner's Die Walküre as part of the Wagner Lesarten project initiated by Concerto Köln and Kent Nagano, which includes guest appearances at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Dresden Music Festival.
