Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his famous incidental music for Goethe’s tragedy Egmont in 1810, a fact which caused the Theater an der Wien to commission a new work from Christian Jost for the Beethoven Year: Egmont as an opera with musical references to Beethoven was first performed in February 2020 in Vienna, just before the worldwide Covid pandemic began. Now, a full two years later, the Bielefeld Theatre presents the German premiere, directed by Nadja Loschky. The Bielefeld native Iris Vermillion, who has made a career for herself at the most important international stages and opera houses, returns to the theatre of her hometown for this special occasion, lending Jost’s Margarete von Parma her impressive vocal and dramatic presence.
