Following Bach’s Mass in B-minor with the Spanish National Orchestra under David Afkham and concert performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Jan Willem de Vriend, Jeremy Ovenden joins the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under René Jacobs in Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt, appearing at the Philharmonie de Paris, the Konzerthaus Freiburg and Berlin’s Philharmonie.
Without exaggeration, Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egypt can be labelled a “baroque blockbuster”. His setting of the Old Testament tale about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt could not be more colourful and evocative. At the latest when the famous plagues are described, it becomes obvious why Handel is considered one of the best dramatists of all times.
