A milestone in post-war music history, Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" was premiered in 1962 for the consecration of the new cathedral in Coventry: In memory of the war dead, Britten combined Latin mass texts with poems by the English lyricist Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), who had fallen in the final days of the First World War at the age of 25. Britten sets his deeply rooted pacifist and humanitarian convictions to music and, against the backdrop of the escalating East-West conflict, composes a work that is intended to call for peace, tolerance and understanding throughout the world and is unfortunately once again particularly topical in view of the current global political situation.
In Heidelberg's Heiliggeistkirche, the British tenor Jeremy Ovenden and the Austrian baritone Adrian Eröd will take on the two male solo roles, accompanied by the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra and Choirs under the direction of Dietger Holm.
