OLIVIA VERMEULEN in Mozart's works in Brixen and at the Rheingau Festival

Myths and riddles

"Unfinished and yet outstanding" is the motto of this concert, as Mozart did not complete the Great Mass in C minor or the Requiem. Why his monumental mass was not completed in the years leading up to his early death in 1791 remains something of a mystery to this day. What is clear, however, is why he did not finish his Requiem, probably one of the most famous works in music history: death simply intervened. Both works, which are performed in fragmentary form, are therefore imbued with a special magic, both enveloped in a mystical aura.

Vermeulen will first appear on 1 August in the Romanesque architecture of the Brixen Cathedral, a venue perfect for these works in its acoustic setting. Together they then take to the stage of one of Europe's premier classical music festivals on 3 August at Kloster Eberbach - one of the best-preserved medieval Cistercian monasteries in Germany. Having performed both works with some of the world’s leading orchestras, both in concert and on disc, audiences can expect artistic mastery, with her performances of Mozart's sacred music having garnered critical acclaim, through her "hauntingly beautiful" interpretations and "impeccable" technique.

To round off the season, Olivia Vermeulen will accompany the esteemed Budapest Festival Orchestra, with whom she regularly collaborates, once more in Mozart’s Requiem in San Sebastián, Spain, on 18 August.
