Starting with the premiere on December 10, Patricia Petibon sings all four female roles in Les contes d’Hoffmann for the first time, celebrating Jacques Offenbach’s 200th birthday with his most famous masterwork at La Monnaie in Brussels. Like Adèle Isaac in the world premiere of the work in 1881, she slips into the very different roles of the doll Olympia, the severely ill Antonia, the courtesan Giulietta and the singer Stella. Thus embodying the romantic focus of the titular hero, Patricia Petibon leads him into the psychological depths of fragile dreams and harsh reality. A constellation which only exceptional singers can do justice to, both vocally and in terms of acting, and which promises brilliant evenings at the opera.
The new production is conducted by La Monnaie’s chief conductor Alain Altinoglu; it is directed by the Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski.
