SABINE DEVIEILHE as Zerbinetta at La Scala Milan

The spirited musical comedy Ariadne auf Naxos – considered by many the high point of the collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal – will be staged by the young British director Frederic Wake-Walker in a new production at La Scala in Milan in April 2019. The masterwork tells of the hopes and dreams of a young composer, of women’s broken hearts and of the light way to take life and love – all of which clash with the rough reality (of the theatre).

Sabine Devieilhe returns to La Scala Milan as Zerbinetta – a role that gives her ample opportunity to show off all her qualities as a vocalist and actress. Zerbinetta’s aria is a mix of technical bravura and capricious dramatic irony, in which the composer and his librettist Hofmannsthal take their stage fantasy to extremes.

Sabine Devieilhe’s interpretations are compelling not only in their tonal beauty, but also due to their dramatic intensity and their great respect for score and text. Even at dizzying heights, her voice remains beautiful and crystal-clear. Coloraturas pearl from her mouth with ease, yet also with dynamic intensity – as you can see and hear in the video.
