Thomas Ebenstein is undoubtedly one of the most versatile character tenors of his generation: whether as Monostatos in The Magic Flute at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Bavarian State Opera or as Dr Cajus in Falstaff at the Salzburg Festival - Thomas Ebenstein's interpretations always captivate with strong role portraits and in-depth character studies.
At the Vienna State Opera, where he has been a permanent member of the ensemble since 2012/2013, the tenor has appeared in a wide variety of roles over the years, spanning an equally rich repertoire - from Arnalta in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea to Caliban in Thomas Adès' The Tempest.
Key roles include Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail - including in a production at the Salzburg Festival, released on DVD by Arthaus Musik - Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos, Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer, David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Mime in Das Rheingold and Siegfried, Scribe in Khovanshchina, Prince Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky in Boris Godunov, A Shabby Peasant in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Truffaldino in The Love for Three Oranges, Bob Boles in Peter Grimes and Alfred in Die Fledermaus.
In April, Thomas Ebenstein will make his house debut at Bern Theatre as Mime in a new production of Siegfried directed by Nicholas Carter and staged by Ewelina Marciniak.
We look forward to a fruitful collaboration and many further inspiring projects together!
