Thomas Quasthoff is the best example for the fact that one can indeed reinvent oneself, even at a later stage in life. The celebrated classical recitalist has become a sought-after jazz singer. Thus, he will celebrate his 60th birthday at Cologne’s Philharmonie, at Castle Elmau, at the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden and Vienna’s Konzerthaus – making music with friends who are among the greatest names in jazz.
The “man with the most beautiful voice in the world,” as Der Stern called him, knows exactly what he is doing. And what he wants. The fact that powerful interpretations and stylistic assurance go hand in hand here was demonstrated by his unforgotten Schubert interpretations and is now equally obvious and authentic in jazz. The audience reactions show that the bass-baritone’s goal of truly touching people with his voice is fully realized, and rave reviews from the press still document the fascination and enthusiasm his exceptional voice engenders in his listeners.
Join us in looking forward to some birthday jazz sessions of the extraordinary kind, when Thomas Quasthoff and his trio – Simon Oslender (piano), Dieter Ilg (double bass) and Wolfgang Haffner (drums) – welcome “special guests” Pe Werner (vocals), Bruno Müller (guitar), Nils Landgren (trombone) and none lesser than Bill Evans on saxophone for a special celebration.
