At the premiere venue of Strauss' second operetta, Nikolaus Habjan tells the adventurous love story from the carnivalesque artistic milieu with a twinkle in his eye. The painter Arthur Bryck met the pretty Marie in a mountain village, loved her, painted her and moved on - promising to come back and marry her. That was a year ago. Since then, Marie has been waiting by the wayside in her wedding dress for the impostor. Finally, she sets off for Rome herself, where the absconder is rumoured to be hanging around. Disguised as a young man, she becomes his apprentice and, in the midst of the Roman carnival, manages to put a stop to all his other amorous ambitions and make him realise that only the faithful Marie deserves his love ...
In between, the masquerade is interspersed with artists' parties, scenes of jealousy, kisses in the monastery garden and failed love adventures, until finally Prince Carnival sweeps away all the vain and happy lovers as well as the one or other jealous person in his big party.
As the painter Robert Hesse and friend of the protagonist, Adrian Eröd can now be seen again on the stage of the newly renovated Theater an der Wien after various appearances at the Vienna State Opera.
