Born in Vienna in 1885, Egon Wellesz was the son of Hungarian Jews and thus subjected to persecution by the National Socialists as a representative of ‘degenerate’ music. He found a new home in England, where he died in 1974.
To mark the 50th anniversary of his death, the Viennese baritone Adrian Eröd will present his new CD ‘Berührungspunkte’ (Touchpoints) in the Gläserne Saal of the Musikverein, which shows this important composer from Vienna as a link between past and present. On this evening, he will sing songs by Egon Wellesz, but also by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Aribert Reimann. He will also talk to Ursula Magnes about his relationship to Wellesz's music and his new CD. Another dialogue partner of Ursula Magnes will be Hartmut Krones, the chairman of the Egon Wellesz Fund. With this evening, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde is commemorating the composer, who was made an honorary member of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in 1973, one year before his death.
An article by Dr Christian Heindl in the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde magazine on Egon Wellesz and the many programmatic "points of contact" on the new CD is well worth reading and can be found here.
‘Berührungspunkte’ (touchingpoints) will be released on 9 November 2024 on the Quinton Records label.
