GEORG NIGL sings "Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria" at the Vienna State Opera

This is how the Austrian press celebrated Georg Nigl as Ulisse in Monteverdi's opera at the premiere of the new production of Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in patria in April last year. We look forward to seeing him on stage again in this role at the Vienna State Opera.

Georg Nigl demonstrates his expertise and deep affinity with Monteverdi's music, particularly through his unmistakable style of interpretation, which focuses on the declamatory and emotional intensity of the works.

Based on Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, the opera begins at the moment when Odysseus (Ulisse in Italian) returns home from the Trojan War. He is dropped off asleep on his home island of Ithaca and disguises himself as a beggar in order to remain unrecognised. Eumete takes him in and Odysseus initially only pretends to be a beggar. Eumete takes him in and Odysseus initially only reveals himself to his son Telemaco. His wife Penelope has been torn for 20 years between hoping for Odysseus' return and courting suitors who are pressurising her into marriage.
